A Florida panther pauses in a midnight stroll. He seems all alone in the forest, but look closer!
Could you imagine being deep in the Florida forest at night? You see something moving but you can't quite make it out... because 'de noche... todos los gatos son pájaros' (at night... all the cats are birds.)
This is my (accidental) take on a very old Spanish saying. The original is 'de noche, todos los gatos son pardos' (at night, all the cats are black.) It originally conveyed the meaning, roughly, of 'once darkness falls it's hard to tell one person from another, one with good intentions, or one with bad.' I like the meaning in the sense that everything looks the same in the dark and it's hard to distinguish one thing from the other, so different from what a scene would look like during the day! But when I first heard this saying, I heard 'pájaros' (birds) instead of 'pardos' (black, brownish gray) …. which made so much sense to me. At night everything blends together… all the cats do look like birds! In this art print the normally elusive Florida panther is the focal point, surrounded by hidden birds of the forest.
